“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” – Confucius
I truly believe in this quote by Confucius. A fuschia pink iPod is my constant companion. It is one of the few things I never leave home without. And it would not be entirely perfidious to admit that my iTunes library is one of my most treasured possessions.
In case you didn’t know, music has health benefits too.
- Music Makes You Happier
- Music Enhances Running Performance
- Music Reduces Depression
- Music Elevates Your Mood While Driving
- Music Reduces Pain
- Music Keeps Your Brain Healthy in Old Age
We are already halfway through 2017 and some great songs released in the first half of the year. I am just wondering how difficult would it be to decide the Grammy Award winner in 2018.
Let me share with you, my top 10 of 2017 so far….
Ed Sheeran – Shape of You
The year 2017 began with a bang when Taylor Swift released Ed Sheeran’s new single ‘Shape of you’. It was an instant love for me. I always thought Sheeran could come up with only soft romantic numbers like ‘Thinking out loud’ and ‘Tenerife Sea’ but he took his music to a whole different level with this song.
Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee – Despacito (Remix Audio) ft. Justin Bieber
Despacito is mostly Spanish, still, you can’t resist singing it out loud. Even though Justin Bieber cannot remember the Spanish lyrics of the song himself, it is his 5th No. 1 songs in the U.S after ‘What Do You Mean?,’ ‘Sorry,’ ‘Love Yourself,’ and ‘I’m The One’. This song might even turn you into a ‘Belieber’ if you aren’t one already.
Harry Styles – Sign of the Times
This a song for the gloomy days. One of One Direction’s strongest voices – Harry Styles – produced a pretty yet plaintive and yearning melody. Poetic lines, a swooning piano ballad, a chorus of electric guitars don’t make ‘Sign of Times’ enormously fun but this song does showcase Styles’ vocal prowess.
Selena Gomez – Bad Liar
Honestly, I was never a fan of Selena Gomez’s singing, but ‘Bad Liar’ blew my mind away. How sexy does she sound in the song? This song will grow on you. This tongue-twister of a song will make your soul delirious. I guess this is going to be on my playlist for a very very long time, maybe until eternity.
Charlie Puth – Attention
Charlie Puth caught my wavering attention with this song. Sadly, they don’t make songs like these anymore. It such an effortlessly sung number and that’s what makes it stand out. His falsetto, simple flirty lyrics, and groovy music make ‘Attention’ good enough for a foot tap or two.
Imagine Dragons – Believer
Soul-stirring lyrics, punk rock music, big choruses, huge vocals and spellbinding new style make Imagine Dragons’ ‘Believer’ epic. The band’s lead vocalist Dan Reynolds praises his life’s pain for making him a believer and I am sure all of us will be able to connect with this song on a mystical level.
Heavy – Linkin Park (feat. Kiiara)
If you are expecting a heavy metal trademark Linkin Park song, stop right there. This is a pop song. Yes, you read it right, LP collaborated with singer-songwriter Kiiara and produced a pop song. There are no mixed elements of rock, metal, hip-hip or electronic music. It is wildly different to anything they’ve done before. Yet, it is both ‘rad’ and ‘dope’.
Kygo, Selena Gomez – It Ain’t Me
Another masterstroke by Selena Gomez this year. What a song this is! ‘It ain’t me’ boasts of a powerful tune and perfectly finds a balance that suits both Selena and Kygo. The song co-written by Selena is subdued, dark, infinitely relatable, catchy and has a massive radio appeal.
The Chainsmokers & Coldplay – Something Just Like This
What brilliant lyrics! You can’t stop admiring the references used by Chris Martin and Co. to describe the kind of love one needs in life. Two of the biggest names in the music industry – Coldplay and The Chainsmokers – collaborated and produced a song that is transcendent and other-worldly.
OneRepublic – No Vacancy
I love OneRepublic and I love Ryan Tedder even more. I was heartbroken when I read that the band came close to breaking up because he nearly suffered a mental breakdown. I am glad that Tedder decided to do the opposite of quit and gave us OneRepublic’s poppiest song yet.
These are some of the songs that could have featured on this list easily:
- Katy Perry – Bon Appétit ft. Migos
- Imagine Dragons – Thunder
- David Guetta ft Justin Bieber – 2U
- DJ Khaled – I’m the One ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne
- Ed Sheeran – Perfect
- Robin Schulz – OK (feat. James Blunt)
- ZAYN, Taylor Swift – I Don’t Wanna Live Forever
- The Chainsmokers – Paris
- Miley Cyrus – Malibu
